Some of these films are really daggy, dodgy and some would consider pretty awful…but for one reason or another I love them. I will try to explain why, and probably work something out myself. There is probably only one (maybe two) that I would even put in my top 50, but they have some form of spell over me? Let me know if there are any films you keep coming back to.
The Mighty Ducks films (1992-96)
I love these films. The story of a rag-tag group of kids and a down and out ex-hockey star overcoming the odds for a happy ending…….ahhhhh (sigh)! The success at the time of this series of films spawned a real professional hockey team that is still playing today! This is often shown on a Sunday afternoon on television, I have been admonished more than once by my wife for being glued to a set of films I have seen sooo many times, but alas I am trapped.
Sister Act (1&2) (1992-3)
I am not a big God person so it cannot be that. I did think Whoopie Goldberg was funny in here Pink Cadillac, Jumping Jack Flash, Ghost years and I am a sucker for a musical, as you will see with some other entries here. This is another film that they throw on television outside of the ratings season and I always watch it, even going to the extent of taping and watching. There was a somewhat successful stage play to come out of these films, hopefully it will tour here and I can get, ‘back in the habit’, in a different genre.
Easy A (2010)
A more recent edition to my obsession with certain films, already I could not tell you the amount of times I have seen it. I think it is because Emma Stone is gorgeous, but in this she is also witty and smart combine this with stellar performances by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as her parents and you have a winner. Also I am a fan of Cougar Town and Dan Byrd from said show is also in this, and again he is excellent. I would argue this film is likable due to good cast, great performances and a solid script.
Every Christmas I have to watch this film, not on the day, but during the season and I do. I watch it alone as my wife does not like Bill Murray, or the film. It has become my tradition. It is not the greatest movie, it does have Karen Allen, which is cool as she was in Raiders of the Lost Ark (A favourite of mine) and the ghost of Christmas present played by Carol Kane is just awesome. I think I link this with family and happy holiday seasons, it is my comfort film.
I am not sure how many people would know this film that well and I could have included it in my earlier 10 films you may not have seen! post. For the uninitiated this is a comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Justin Long, David Koechner, Luis Guzmán and Dane Cook, among others. It takes place ostensibly in a theme restaurant called Shenaniganz. Relationships, bad customers, life decision all result in a very, very funny film. Ryan Reynolds is outstanding in this and definitely is the driving force for much of the comedy. I have seen it many times, as recently as this week, and recommend it to anyone who likes a laugh….and who doesn’t?
Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
This is one of the two in my top 50 easily; it is one of my favourite films of all time. I have been watching this as long as I can remember watching film, I own it on multiple formats, I know the songs and the words almost verbatim. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds create magic in this film. This is as perfect as a musical gets.
Cocktails and dreams are created and destroyed in this drunken homage to the humble bar tender. You know this film! Brian Brown and Tom Cruise are bartenders; they fling around bottles and create fabulous concoctions for the patrons of their establishment. Cruise has a relationship with Elizabeth Shue, which is on again off again, Brown is a troubled soul, bad things happen, good things happen they all (almost all) live happily ever after. This is a film I do not really know why I come back to. I saw it at an impressionable age I remember smashing empty bottle and glasses trying to replicate the moves. I think it was a lifestyle I coveted as a youth…..I watch it often and increasingly find myself cringing at the hardships in the film….yet I still watch it.
Role Models (2008)
Look at the cast! Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch, Ken Jeong this is a quality line up and it shows in this film. A comedy, with a little romance thrown in for good measure. Also a coming of age story and a film about LARPing (Google it!). It has it all. I am a huge Paul Rudd fan and he is superb in this film, watch it for his rant about coffee sizes it is priceless. Everyone works well in this to create a very funny film with a big heart.
‘Grease is the word’ and this film is the bomb! I loved this film growing up and continue to do so. I am joined here by my wife, whom also loves Grease, but her taste is not to be trusted as she liked Grease 2, that film was a dog. Back to Grease. This is now an iconic film and made the career of Olivia Newton John whose acting performance is at best laboured, she is saved by the charismatic John Trevolta and a solid support cast which included Stockard Channing. The songs are perfect, the story ageless love and music again…..ahhhh (sigh)!
Super Troopers (2001)
Flat out funny, this film makes me laugh out loud every time I watch it and I watch this a lot. This is the second entry that wold be in my top 50. The Broken Lizard gang, who have never lived up to the hilarity of this film, hit a home run here. There is no use going into the cast, as most of them are not high profile, but the stuff they get up to as they protect and serve is fantastic. This is a great combination of perfect writing and flawless delivery. It shows there is a connection between these guys and I hope they do go back and make a sequel, of which there is talk. You will cry when you see this film.
There are several movies that would fit in this category, but I limited it to 10. These are films like Dirty Dancing, which I watched last night, Footloose, the original not the terrible remake and American History X. Why these films I do not know maybe in another blog I will work it out for now, what movies are you addicted to?
